Erica Gimpel was born in Manhattan, to Phyllis Bash, a concert singer and Joseph Gimpel, an actor, singer and short story writer.
Her parents met and fell in love at their singing teachers studio and got married in the early 60's when interracial marriage was a radical thing to do. As a child, Erica would go on tour with her mother who was performing the role of Bess in the opera "Porgy and Bess". As a member of the chorus, Erica had her first acting experience, and at seven-years-old decided to become an actress. Later, she got accepted into the High School for the Performing Arts' Drama Department where her formal acting training began and passion for the craft ignited.
As a writer, Erica was commissioned by artistic director-choreographer Hilary Thomas, of the Lineage Dance Company to collaborate on a music and dance multimedia performance piece using Erica's life story and music as the centerpiece.
Their collaboration evolved into the very personal and moving story "Soaring To Freedom", which had its premiere run in Los Angeles. Erica's other written works include: one-hour drama spec pilot "Hard Choices" and feature film "The Invitation".
