What do you put on sconces

Most sconces mount with a center stud so you can level the fixture even if the box is not level. On average, it should take about three hours to run cable, install a switch, and mount two wall sconces.

Before you begin, make sure you know how to strip, splice, and connect wires , how to install electrical boxes , and how to run cable through walls and ceilings. Then follow these step-by-step instructions on how to install wall-mounted lighting.

Before you begin, shut off power to the circuit. Use a voltage tester to check that the power is off. Mark the area where you plan to place the wall sconce. To cut wall holes for the sconce boxes and light switch , use a utility knife to trace the outline and cut the hole with a drywall saw. Run cable from the power source to the switch, then to the sconces. Clamp cable to the wall box, tugging gently to make sure the clamp is tight.

To install the box, push it into the hole in the wall, enlarging the hole with a utility knife if needed. Tighten the screws until the box is firmly attached. Most wall sconces come with all the necessary hardware for mounting, which is usually a strap with a center stud. The strap also helps carry heat away from the fixture.

To wire a sconce, splice the white fixture lead to the white wire and the black lead to the black wire. Connect the grounds. If desired, you can test the power at this point to make sure the light is functional. When would you pick one over the other? CP: There are no specific rules about when someone should use a candle sconce versus a swing arm lamp. I once saw a designer use two swing arm wall lamps to highlight a painting on the wall.

It was an unusual-looking installation but it worked with the aesthetic of the home. Can you offer some guidelines for hanging sconces—how high on the wall, and also how far apart from each other? CP: If the ceilings are 8 feet, 74 inches above the finished floor to the center of the wall sconce is a good rule of thumb. Another guideline is to measure down 6 inches from the top of the window, and then use that as your mounting height for all the wall sconces in the room.

For up-light sconces, keep in mind that you want at least 12 inches but not more than 36 inches between the sconce and the ceiling. If a window or fireplace is centered on a wall, then place a sconce on either side centered on each wall. If you want to break up a long wall by using two sconces, place them one-quarter of the distance in from each end. Its low profile makes it perfect for narrow spaces, and the onyx hides the light source very well, resulting in a warm lighting effect.

CP: In bathrooms, wall sconces are ideal for mirror lighting. White or off-white glass is best because the diffused light will permeate the entire space and the color of the light will be good for using the mirror.

If you are using small sconces, measure from the top of the mirror to one-quarter of the way down to establish your center mounting height. While a floor lamp or even a bedside table lamp take up valuable room, wall-mounted sconces free up space so that you can use it for other tasks. While they are currently pretty popular as bedside lights , sconces can also serve you well in the home office and library by replacing the traditional table lamps.

A tidy way to clear up the desk! There are plenty of choices when it comes to wall sconces. The styles are simply endless, and you can get everything ranging from Victorian and Colonial sconces to super sleek and timeless pieces like the Serge Mouille Lamps.

Also consider the size and placement of the sconce before you actually make the buy. While large and grand sconces are apt for accent lighting, task and ambient lighting requires more modest and focused lights. When it comes to sconces, it is not just the light that makes a difference, but also the shadows. So, make sure that the direction of the light and its pattern are appropriate for your home. Some sconces offer interesting shapes and dramatic shadows that make a big impact on the overall appearance of the room.

Nothing sets the mood for a romantic evening like dimmed down lights and few lit candles. Why not make this a permanent feature of your master bedroom or the home spa by simply adding a few candle sconces? Classic and charismatic, candle sconces bring home a special glitter of their own. While you always need to be extra careful with an open flame, a few properly placed candle sconces do transform the atmosphere of an interior and usher in serenity and cozy warmth.

Use candle sconces to complement the fireplace or highlight your entry without ornate details. Using multiple sconce lights creates drama while adding to the ambient lighting of the room.

There are various configurations and ways in which you can use them to alter this visual. The s German ceiling fixture is from Alan Moss.
