No one could have predicted that. As one of the sharpest minds in the industry, Watts had built a company that featured creative storylines, frenzied crowds and motivated talent. But a number of things conspired against him. With his spiked, blond hair, Sting had the right look for the era. While other UWF wrestlers were either forgotten or deliberately buried in WCW, Sting was quickly becoming one of the most popular stars.
Still, he appeared to keep his growing fame in perspective. Backstage, you could relate to him as one professional to the other. But Sting did it anyway. The role was supposed to be played by Al Perez. There was no consistency. But in spite of everything, he put on a great show every time. Prichard was on the WWE payroll by this point and involved in outreach to talent in other promotions.
He remembers the company being close to signing Sting in , but unable to reach terms. But nothing ever happened. In retrospect, Prichard theorizes that Sting may have been better off in the No.
And back then, when someone new would come in, Vince liked to repackage him. And no one knows how that would have turned out. On September 4, , U. Champion Sting defeated Flair via disqualification on the premier episode of Nitro. I want to play with the big boys. Even the business-like Sting was caught up in the merriment.
Yet success came with a cost. She had a life. I had a life. And now, we had two boys. I was losing control over every part of my life. For years, his brother Jeff, pastor of the Rock Community Church in Waxahachie, Texas, had been urging Borden to face his demons and take solace in Christianity. And I wound up coming clean and confessing it all. On the road, he was his own man.
There was a reason why Steve separated himself. With the industry in flux, Sting updated his look, adorning his features with white face paint and replacing his s platinum locks with longer, dark hair.
He also began appearing in the rafters, mysteriously staring down at the action in the arena. For months, Sting avoided any conflict between the ropes. The people are going to get bored with this. Additionally, he was concerned about being perceived as a Brandon Lee knockoff.
That changed, however, when Sting began rappelling down from the ceiling. Someone who flies. In order to prepare Borden for the role, Edwards took the wrestler rock climbing and rappelling on Rocky Peak, on the border of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties. The idea was to just get him comfortable.
But at the arena, just finding the ceiling was a formidable task, beginning with taking the elevator to the highest portion of the building. I showed him how if anything went wrong, you could pull the rope and stop it. Then Sting went down by himself. Over the next few weeks, the two developed a routine, rehearsing the drop at about 2 p.
So we let him down off a rappelling rack like a window washer and controlled the speed so the cameras could get him. If the cameras missed, why do all that work? We get up there in the afternoon to test everything out. So I went down one time by myself to show him it would be OK. And after that it was a breeze. When he jumped out, he got into it so much he wanted to do it again and again. He was smiling from ear to ear.
At another show, Sting was supposed to crash through a table. Borden was angry. Hall and Nash were the first two members of the New World Order before Hulk Hogan turned heel and was revealed as their leader.
As time went on, Hall's personal issues made him an unreliable talent for WCW. Nash always went out of his way to help his friend and continued to do so in later years. The two are still quite close after all these years. The infamous segment of the New World Order wrestlers mocking the Four Horsemen saw them cross the line. Many wrestlers in the back were most upset at Kevin Nash for his disrespectful depiction of Arn Anderson, with the former mocking the latter's real retirement speech.
Anderson and Ric Flair held a grudge with Anderson for quite some time due to this act of disrespect. Konnan was one of the few young wrestlers to develop a close bond with Kevin Nash.
They worked together in the New World Order faction, and Nash handpicked Konnan to be a founding member of the Wolfpac face version of the faction. Konnan's promos played a huge role in the Wolfpac's success, along with also having one of the coolest entrances in the business. Over the years, Konnan has had mostly positive things to say about his interactions with Nash.
The backstage politics of Kevin Nash saw Piper questioning him on many levels, causing tension between them. Nash claimed they got into a fight where he easily defeated Piper before they made peace. The legendary run of Sting saw him working as the unofficial face of the company when Kevin Nash and others joined WCW.
Sting seemed to get along well with most others and rarely had any instances of backstage heat with his peers. Nash and Sting created a solid friendship that started off in WCW since the two interacted quite a few times during the New World Order storyline.
Bryan Clark went under a few different names throughout his wrestling careers, including Adam Bomb and Wrath. Wrath had a long winning streak with fans wondering if he was going to have feuds with bigger stars moving forward. The winning streak ended when Nash defeated him on Nitro with ease. Clark has buried Nash and other members of the Kliq in various shoot interviews.
